Notes from an Occupation X (this doesn’t really fall anywhere)
The following, while not an official statement from OccupySF, was consensed upon, with several friendly amendments to the original document, at our General Assembly on Friday October 21, 2011. It is put out on behalf of the OccupySF Welcome Committee and intended for general distribution, largely to answer two of the most common questions: “Why are you here?” and “What are you doing about the police?”. Please read and distribute anywhere and everywhere.
“We the People, assemble in solidarity to exercise our right to free speech, and to protest the mass injustices committed against the people and all beings of this nation, and all nations.
We assemble here as people in accordance with the Right to Free Speech and Assembly.
Any attempt to curb, curtail or suppress the Occupation; be it through state violence or prohibitively expensive permit processes; is rejected.
Our Occupation grows in strength and numbers. We will not be displaced or dispersed. We are the 99%.
Signed, OccupySF Welcome Committee”
Note: Again, I will strongly reiterate that this is not an official statement from OccupySF. This is the first ‘homegrown’ flyer, if you will, from OccupySF and was approved and is being put out on behalf of the OccupySF Welcome Committee to answer two very common questions, as highlighted above. Tonight was very serendipitous, as while we were in General Assembly, the city served us with three different sets of papers, so this was passed relatively easily, with a few instantly agreeable friendly amendments. I am so pleased! This was my first proposal to the GA of anything and not only was it well received, it passed and I got so many hugs, handshakes and ‘thank yous’ afterwards. I am so honored and humbled and I cannot even tell you how warm and excited I feel.
